furnishings.
Any florist can fill a home with
blossoms, but this designer creates arrangements that are true home
furnishings. At
Grasmere, her Barrington, Rhode Island, shop,
you'll find inspiration for decorating every room with floral art.
Ever since Beth Siqueland-Gresch opened her business in a
gray-shingled house four years ago, she has had a lot of explaining to
do: "Passersby see the plants lining the front steps and naturally
assume this is a traditional flower shop where they can just pop in
for a quick dozen roses," she says. Imagine their surprise when Beth
directs them instead to roses interspersed with lavender, lemon leaf,
hydrangea, and parchment pears in a footed urn or several dozen
beautifully preserved roses sprouting from a cast iron pot -- all
dried by the owner herself to ensure that every petal retains its
living shape and shading.
"These arrangements are meant to be in a room for at least eight
months, sometimes two years, so every element has to be intriguing,
which is why I also add ribbon details and use unusual containers,"
points out Beth. Rather than leaving with a paper-wrapped bouquet that
will fade in three days' time, visitors often bring home a bit of
decorative drama that's both lavish and lasting.
